Gates Thomas, Music Director

  Email: music@uucqc.org

Gates Thomas is a composer, arranger and conductor whose music has been performed and recorded by Gary Burton, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Sadao Watanabe, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, Choral Chameleon, the Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra, and the New American Orchestra of Chicago. He created and produced Smoke Ring, a short-form “mockumentary” film in which actual footage from 1950s cigarette commercials is given new musical underscoring.
Gates is Professor of Contemporary Writing and Production at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and a 2015-16 Fellow at the George Washington National Library in Mount Vernon VA. He has presented guest lectures there and at the New School
University in New York, the University of Northern Iowa, and the German-American Heritage Center. As a historian, his areas of inquiry include 20 th century music, the American Revolution, the United States Navy, the history of Davenport, and the
recording arts.
A native Davenporter, Gates Thomas moved to New York City in 1996. He and his partner Angel Matias returned to the Quad-Cities in October 2020 to be closer to their families and breathe easier. They live in downtown Davenport, in a jungle of green plants 200 feet above street level.
